Before watching the video titled “the devils playground” I knew close to nothing about the Amish culture. Now I know that the Amish culture is known for simple living, plain dress, Christian pacifism, and slowly adapting to modern technology. Also that they are usually strictly committed to church rules. One thing that shocked me was the youth going against some if these beliefs and drinking as well as debating if they wanted to remain or leave there community during the period of rumspringa. I learned that rumspringa is a time period where young boys and girls are given greater personal freedom and are able to enter a time of greater social activity. Which confuses me a little on how this should change there healthcare.

What I learned about the Amish culture is the tradition of Rumspringa which is the choice of the young adults to leave or join the community. During this time they have more freedom and are allowed to “experiment” with the outside world. During Faron’s rumspringa in the video, he begins to sell and use drugs. I think that this is similar to what we learned previously in the semester about the correlation of wellness with religion.
One of the things that surprised me is the placing of a bann on people who leave the community. A bann on someone is where they are exiled by the family and are no longer in communication with anyone in the community. These individuals can now receive modern Western medicine and are no longer obligated to continue with the Amish traditions. This situation reminds me of case study two where the family had to make a choice between traditional or western medicine.
I think that the knowledge of Rumspringa can change how health care is provided to the Amish by using that time to take advantage of Western medicine. If they use that time to go to proper doctors and dentists then their overall health and wellness would increase.
