In chapter 7 of the textbook, the topic of carbohydrates was covered in much detail. Additionally, monosaccharides and disaccharides were discussed. When carbohydrates are found in nature, they are typically polysaccharides, also known as glycans. From the prefix, it can be observed that polysaccharides are different compared to monosaccharides in terms of bonding and length. The two types of polysaccharides mentioned are homopolysaccharides and heteropolysaccharides. The difference between these two polysaccharides is that homopolysaccharides have one monomeric sugar species and heteropolysaccharides have multiple monomeric sugars. These types of polysaccharides are significant and have many purposes. Some homopolysaccharides can act as storage forms of monosaccharides and can be used for fuels. A few examples of homopolysaccharides are starch and glycogen. Also, homopolysaccharides like cellulose and chitin are essential for structure in plant cells and animal exoskeletons. On the other hand, heteropolysaccharides can also help with other organisms. A few examples of this are in animal tissue, there are heteropolysaccharides in the extracellular area, which helps hold the cells together. Furthermore, it helps provide and define structure for cells, tissues, and organs. In bacteria cells, the peptidoglycan, which serves as the layer of bacteria cells, is made up of heteropolysaccharides.
