Midwives are the lead practitioners in the care of low risk women during pregnancy, labour and the post-partum period. When risk factors are identified, care may be given by a multi-disciplinary team.
It is your role as a midwife to ensure that the woman has an experience of maternity care which appropriately identifies the risks to her health whilst ensuring that she is cared for holistically and is facilitated to make evidence-based informed choices about her care.
To do this, midwives must have a critical appreciation of the research on which the clinical guidelines are based.
Select a current NICE/ RCOG guideline which may influence clinical practice, attach this as an appendix in your work.
Find the underpinning research on which the guideline is based. Critically appraise the underpinning research, comparing with other contemporaneous research.
You will use this to demonstrate how you would provide research-informed, holistic midwifery care for women whose care would be influenced by this guideline.
Draw a conclusion around the relevance of the guideline in light of your appraisal of the contemporary evidence you have explored.
