Assignment – Health Equity Worksheet.
Mapping Community Assets
For the PHP, you will select a specific community of interest to you. The community can be a demographic group (e.g., race/ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation, etc.), a geographical area (e.g., state, city, region), or some combination of the two.
The community should be specific enough so that you can identify academic research articles from the library about the group, but broad enough so that you have a sufficient amount of information to discuss in the project.
See the PHP assignment description in Blackboard or PLE for a list of suggested populations.
Instructions: Complete the below worksheet. Use at least two scholarly academic journal articles when answering the questions. Include both in-text citations and full references in APA style for your sources at the end of the document. (If you’re unsure what a scholarly source is or how to cite them in APA style, please see the announcements in Blackboard related to this.)
What population will you focus on for your PHP? Why have you selected this population? (50 words)
Describe the community, including a demographic breakdown of this population, information about where the population is located, socioeconomic status, culture, and major differences between this population and the majority population overall.
Make a case for why this is an important population on which to focus your project. Use scholarly, academic journal articles with epidemiologic information as a reference for this information and include correct APA citations (in-text and at the end in the References section). (100 words)
The following chart lists areas that are potentially positive or negative in people’s lives, depending on their circumstances. Think about each topic and how it currently affects the community/population you selected for the PHP. Decide whether it is a health threat/stressor (something that may negatively impact health) or a resource (something that may enhance/support health) in the life of the community/population. That is, does this aspect of where the community/population lives help or hurt their health?
For example, if healthy food is not readily and easily accessible and available to your selected community/population, this would be noted as a stressor (i.e., example: the community does not have healthy food accessible and available, so this negatively impacts their health). A health resource is something the population has access to and supports/enhances their health. Explain why you rated each area the way you did. Note: there may be multiple, even contradictory, answers per topic. Use scholarly, academic journal articles to support your work and include correct APA citations (in-text and at the end in the References section).
Topic Resource or Stressor? Why?
Healthy Food Access and Availability
Quality Education
Good Transportation / Planning
Affordable Housing
Good Jobs & Work Opportunities
Business Investment and Development
Income and Wealth
Social Supports
Public Safety
Green Spaces
Recreational Opportunities
Summarize the above information. Explain how the factors you discussed above can determine the health for the selected community/population. In addition, discuss the impact that racism, trust, stigma, and bias may have on health of this population. Consider this community/population in relation to the issues discussed in the two videos assigned this week. Use scholarly, academic journal articles to support your work and include correct APA citations (in-text and at the end in the References section). (250 words)
