Component B (essay):
This assessment requires you to produce a 2,500-word essay. This assessment provides you with an opportunity to apply your acquired knowledge within the area of infectious diseases and immunity, as well as, to demonstrate independent research of published literature, academic writing and science communication skills. The title of an essay is “Global health, infection and immunity” and should be focused on three different infectious agents of your choice, pathogenesis and epidemiology of the diseases their cause and human immunity.
The three infectious agents must be of three different types. Your essay needs to follow an academic writing style and key research findings need to be presented professionally, with support from academic sources, such as published articles in science journals. A reference list must be provided, which contains scientific publications and academic texts correctly cited according to UWE Harvard style.
Employability link: this assessment replicates the world of work where research and collection of information must be carried independently and communicated in a format of a short essay. Academic writing, as well as, concise written communication skills in a clear and logical manner are being developed through this assignment.
A maximum tolerance of 10% above the word count is allowed. Once the upper limit of the word count has been reached, no further work will be taken into account when awarding marks. Work falling below the required word count risks being self-penalising as it is unlikely that students will cover sufficient material to meet the intended learning outcomes.
The word count includes everything in the main body of the text including; headings/titles, tables, citations, quotations, in text references, lists. Appendices, foot notes, and the bibliography are not included in the word count. Appendices should be kept to a minimum and should only be used to support the academic arguments in the main text, and therefore will not contribute towards the awarded marks. Students must clearly indicate the precise word count on the title page of each assignment.

• formatted in a font size of 12
• formatted with a line spacing of 1.5
• aligned to the left of the page
• formatted to contain page numbers centred at the bottom of the page
• formatted to include WS number in the header (do not use your name within your
submission)
• structured to include a title, introduction, main part and conclusion
• follow the word count (if specified)
