Scenario
You recently met with Marcy Jones, the HIM Director at LiveWell Hospital. You are eager to discuss the progress you have made in implementing the new EHR system and compare notes on LiveWell’s previous EHR implementation process. LiveWell has been operating with an EHR system for five years and recently started participating in a health information exchange (HIE) network. Marcy discusses the impact of HIE and how it greatly benefits the hospital and patients. You make a mental note to research the HIE as soon as you get back to the office.
After pondering over the HIE for a few weeks, you decide to propose participating in an HIE network after the EHR system is fully implemented. You have done your research on HIEs and begin writing the proposal to the hospital’s governing board. In the proposal, you include the benefits of participating in an HIE, discuss HIE requirements and standards, illustrate the importance of interoperability and interfacing technology in the HIE, and identify your role as a health information professional in HIEs and interoperability.
