Environmental Science and Services
Coursework 1 (Report) tests students’ ability to prioritise, synthesise and critically evaluate building strategies in order to present ideas and solutions that enhance sustainability and low carbon development.
Coursework 1 will be a report based on individual research and use of the Design SAP software.
Students will receive training on the software and will need to investigate different low carbon and sustainable scenarios and propose energy strategies that help achieve a low carbon domestic building envelope. The Coursework 1 brief will be issued in Week 2 (during the Seminar session).
Students will also receive a session on Academic Report Writing and Critical Thinking (Week 4) delivered by the Academic Learning and Development Team to help them with the level of academic writing required for both Coursework 1 and 2.
This coursework addresses the module learning outcomes. Namely, by the end of the module the successful student will be able to:
1. Appraise the key legislative drivers in relation to sustainable building, low carbon design and energy efficiency of buildings. (KU)
2. Undertake energy and carbon assessments using standard metrics and software and analyse the results of such assessments. (KU)
3. Evaluate the function and design of building services for a simple building, relating to sustainability and human comfort. (KU)
