Social change
Activity #5 is designed to give you an opportunity to research and analyze the contributions of organizations in Santa Cruz County (or other places) that work towards dealing with or eliminating social problem(s).
Choose a specific social problem and then do some quick internet research, finding an organization or agency that works every day to promote social change.
Try to keep it local, but for some topics, you’ll need to go outside of our area.
Your findings will need to include the following in an informal writing format (ie bullet points are acceptable):
Name & location of organization/agency
Specific social problem that the organization/agency addresses
Mission statement (most have an official statement, if not then post their purpose/goals)
Clientele served
Any other background info (length of time this org has been in existence, # of staff, # of volunteers, anything else that you deem important)
Your perspective, as a sociologist, of the organization in general: for example, is it necessary? efficient? well-funded? fulfilling its mission? (Most of the points for this activity comes from here, so be sure to include terms and concepts that you’ve learned in this class)
The goal of us focusing on real organizations and agencies in the community is to share knowledge about available resources. At some point in your life, it is very likely that having this knowledge will come in handy to you or someone you know. Advocate, empower, support.
