This research assignment is designed to give you the opportunity to go deeper into literary analysis and research.
Write a research paper on what the literature shows to be humane or inhumane about America past and present. Your essay should use the literature to show who or what is “in/humane” about America today as it relates to some other time in history.
Your research paper analyzes should use readings (poems, short stories, letters or essays) to make the argument.
The research paper should analyze what specific poems, essays, or short stories show about how human perspective, fairness, and/or voice has been effected by machines, viruses, environmental changes, and/or other factors . It should address how these things have either helped or hinder (or both) humanity.
Discuss how they both warn against humanity becoming less “human” and more like machines but as reflective of different technological challenges and historic time periods.
Be sure to include information about the time period and context of the literature and course texts. The paper should provide specific time periods and dates when comparing inhumane experiences like a pandemic today to past inhumane events in literature.
The research paper draft should analyze and closely cite literary texts (poems, essays, short stories) to construct an argument. It should analyze a couple of the poems, short stories or essays from our course readings to develop and make an argument. Each paragraph should relate to the thesis.

Your research paper draft and final version should include quotes from the course readings. It can agree, disagree, or compare what authors show and say about the topic in essay form.
