Directions
Complete the following tasks:
Review the article introduction and literature review (titled “Background” in the article). Briefly summarize the main concepts and arguments they present. Formatting this is a list is fine and it’s not necessary to write a cohesive summary in paragraph format.
Describe a related project you could explore using data from the GSS. Recommend that you use the GSS Data Explorer to look up variables.
Do not want you to reproduce the research described in the article exactly. You just need to draw inspiration from the ideas and concepts it describes to come up with a project of your own. This will require you to explore the GSS data as you are brainstorming.
You can only use data from the GSS to measure the concepts you are interested in so you are going to have to search it carefully to see what is available. Just because you have an idea related to the article does not mean you will be able to find relevant variables in the GSS. You can use GSS Data from any year between 2000 and 2018 for this.
Note, however, that all the variables you use must come from the same year. You cannot select one variable from 2010 and a different one from 2016- there is no basis for analyzing them together.
Describe the following aspects of your imagined research project:
The general relationship you are exploring. The article, for example, looks at how weight, race, and school racial composition affects girls’ peer acceptance.
A hypothesis that describes what you think you might find. You can use the hypotheses from the article (found at the end of the literature review) as examples of how to write your own.
A list of variables from the GSS that you would use.
For each variable you find, please include a screenshot that shows the variable summary information, the survey question, the year availability, and the list of related variables. It should look like the screenshot below:

As you are reviewing the GSS Data Explorer, please keep in mind that any variables you use need to be measures of the respondent or their experiences, not their assessments of others. The survey questions the variables you select are based on should ask the respondent about themselves.
Once you have submitted your post, please review your peers’ submissions, and then respond to two of them with general comments and/or feedback.
