Identify and describe the event or site, its purpose, character and history.

For this major project, students will analyze a commemorative event or memorial site linked to a conflict covered in this course. In the project students must:
• Identify and describe the event or site, its purpose, character and history
• Set this commemoration in historiographical context, and in the context of the themes and ideas explored in this course regarding memory and remembrance
• Reflect on the commemorative nature and function of the anniversary and/or site
• Topics must be submitted to the instructor by March 3 for approval. Submission must consist of a simple e-mail identifying the topic and a 3-5 sentence description of your proposed approach to the topic.

IMPORTANT: Do not rely on non-specialist encyclopedias (such as Wikipedia) or nonacademic websites (such as History.com) when researching your topic.

Such sources may be helpful starting points for your research, to help orient you to other more indepth sources. But they must not be used for anything more than that.

Do not cite such sources in the footnotes and bibliography of your completed assignment.

Evidence that you have used such sources (whether cited or not) will result in a lower grade, or even a failing grade for the assignment, depending on the extent to which you use them.

The length of the finished essay must be a minimum of six (6) full pages of double-spaced text (not counting title page and bibliography).
