Critically evaluate your design of a sustained intervention or innovation in primary education, evidencing this in relation to English, Mathematics or science
Overview

For this study, you will submit the following elements:
• Proposal (formative)
• Written assignment ( including your ethics protocol) (these two elements account for 70% of your overall grade)
• Presentation (this element accounts for 30% of your overall grade)

This study will require ethical clearance. You will be supported in developing and submitting your intended project title or research methods for ethical clearance.
Proposal (Approximately 500 words- template provided)

You will establish a working title and a clear outline of the intervention/innovation to be designed and evaluated investigated with reference to national frameworks, related significant literature and your intended research strategy.

Your proposal will be reviewed before the project proceeds, and you will receive formative feedback.
You will use this to support the development of your ethics protocol which will be submitted (as an assessed element) with your written project report.
Assignment (5000 words limit)

You are advised to structure your study to include these sections:
• Abstract (Approx. 150 -not included in word count)
• Research question: Introduction/context/rationale for study (800)
• Literature review (700)
• Research methods (500) identify and evaluate the key data collection methods you could use to evaluate the impact of your intervention if you were to implement it
• Research report –analysis of evidence of the intervention you have designed and critical evaluation (2,500) You should critique, evaluate and justify your pedagogical choices
• Conclusions (500)

Indicative word count is provided for guidance only
Your ethics protocol MUST be submitted as an appendix to your study. This will supplement the consideration of research ethics within your main assignment report.
This should include a theoretical, literature-based consideration of the ethical choices you would need to put in place if you were to implement your study with your intended data collection methods.
Presentation (equivalent of 1500 words)

You will be expected to give a presentation. You should aim to speak for 10 minutes and be prepared to answer questions for 5 minutes.
During 2020-21, the presentation will be made in the following way:
You will submit two powerpoint presentations to the dropbox:
• Your project-focused presentation (maximum ten minutes commentary)
• Your responses to the three questions on the powerpoint provided ( maximum five minutes commentary)
Feedback sheets with assessment criteria
Within these documents you will see clear edits in red. This is deliberate, The edits have been highlighted in this way for two key reasons:
• to support you in recognising how your assessment criteria match and yet are distinct from the standard criteria;
• to support marking tutors in ensuring they are using the correct set of assessment criteria for your submissions.

Guidelines

You should identify a focus for research in English, mathematics, or science. The enquiry should focus on the development process of your intervention. You should consider the potential influences on the quality of implementation and the anticipated outcome of a particular intervention or innovation. At the heart of the study is critical evaluation and the possibility of professional change through analysis and reflection.

Data collection methods for this study are likely to include approaches to:
• gaining the perspectives of others (through ‘conversations with a purpose’, e.g. interviews /focus groups);
• documentary analysis (e.g. policy analysis/ work scrutiny/photo analysis); review and critique of your planning documents and the resources you design to support your teaching
• observations (e.g. real time/audio recording/video recording).
• a reflective journal, capturing the development of your thinking through the design process

You are advised to keep a research journal to reflect on the process as it unfolds.
