The food service industry is assumed to only offer jobs in place of careers. The word career is defined as “an occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person’s life and with opportunities for progress” (Oxford Languages). The whole idea of this industry is to provide people with a pleasant, new, and exciting dining experience. From what the public sees, there is limited advancement once you have a certain title. But to me and others working in food there is so much more than being the executive chef or hotel manager.
We should be showcasing that when you receive a plate of food, you experience more than just what a person sees on a plate. Food builds experiences with people; enjoying being together with family and friends. Food also celebrates culture; yet, the best part about a meal is the chance to discover and try new flavors from a variety of cultures, instilling a sense of pride, and a better understanding of one another. These experiences inspire others working in the field to learn more and share more about this industry. There are so many opportunities to gain from such experiences and excitement towards the future. As an example, you can be inspired to open your own restaurants or business, you can work for large corporations in designing, marketing or franchising. There is so much more than just being a cook, or a desk clerk. The opportunities are endless, and this industry will never die. The public needs to eat, people travel on a daily basis.
Food service professionals each have their own background and community to bring to the table.
Their own inspiration is what we should be broadcasting to the public to show that we are more than just an industry with “jobs”, we are a whole society. As an upcoming student in the culinary world I hope to bring these aspects of this industry to society.
