Personal Statement
I am eager to further my education and am applying to your university for a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture. I have completed a bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture at the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong in 2020. And I have work experience in 2 companies in Hong Kong.
Most recently, I worked as a BIM modeler in Forida Limited Hong Kong. My role is to lead 2 landscape projects. Internally, I need to coach my colleagues with standard modelling approach and provide building information to client. While I worked with my team, I noticed that we need to build trust with clients and avoid making promises that we cannot deliver. It is a valuable experience that I could lead a team and take charge. I had built up a strong organization and execution skills which could benefit my whole life.
After graduation in 2020, I worked in Suprahealth S&R Engineering Limited as a designer. I was assigned to work for the children’s playground project for Hong Kong local community. Having a chance to work for the senior designers is truly mind-blowing. To design a playground in a concrete jungle like Hong Kong is very challenging. Because the complexity of this job, correction have to be made frequently. Through the regular meeting, I have lot of chances to improve my presentation skill. Also, I get to know about the construction flow which definitely an extra bonus for me.
During my school in 2019, I participated in a BIM design competition. The aim for this competition is to redesign a manufactory building into a Co-working space by using BIM technology. Our team need to use Revit to present our ideas. Our design concept is focusing on bringing the natural exterior landscape into the interior co-working spaces. In this competition, I learn that courage is the key for everything, willing to take risk and not to be afraid of fail. With the effort of our team and teacher, we are very lucky that we won the competition.
With all this experience, I realized that there are a lot of potential in BIM technology. Data could be extracted easily for calculation. Interactive 3D model is more presentable for my landscape design works. With modelling software, I could visualize my design before they are actually built. Under this rapid change in design industry, continuous education is necessary for my career growth, either modelling skills or design presentation.
During my work in Hong Kong, I noticed that there are a lot of possibility engineering field that can related to the landscape architect industry. Therefore, learning from others is essential for improvement, no matter is a successful story or a failure lesson. I believed that I could learn from the school due to the diversity. Even in daily academic life, cultural exchange with other students could expend my point of view.
It is worth to spend a year or 2 for this life long experience. I have a strong passion to earn a master degree in Landscape Architecture in XXXX university. I would love to contribute and build a better place for the world. I will look forward for your kind consideration and acceptance into the program.
