COLLAPSE
Hi class,
The four most common elements in nursing theories includes person, environment, health, and nursing. These four concepts make up the nursing metaparadigm that frequently interrelate fundamentals to nursing theories and lay the foundation in guiding nurses. To briefly describe each concept, the person refers to the client or patient, who is the recipient of nursing care and may include individuals, groups, family and communities (Yu, S., & Song, J.-E., 2021). The environment is defined as the surroundings, both internal and external factors that affect the human being. Environment can also be interrelated to the situation which includes all positive or negative conditions that affect the patient and/or the physical environment such as family, friends, and significant others (Yu, S., & Song, J.-E., 2021). It is the setting for which the patient decides where they go for their healthcare needs. Health is based on the degree of wellness or well-being that the patient experiences (Yu, S., & Song, J.-E., 2021). This concept has many different meanings and is subject for each patient, clinical setting, and health care providers. Lastly, nursing is a collection of attributes, characteristics, and the actions provided for the patients. Nursing is difficult to defined as there are numerous definitions of nursing, but the ultimate goal of nursing theories is to improve the quality of care provided to patients (Yu, S., & Song, J.-E., 2021).
Choosing the theory of comfort and self-care where the nurse focuses on providing the patient with comfort as their primary objective. This theory is interrelated to Dorothea Orem’s theory of self-care where the idea behind this focus is that if the basic needs of the patient are met, the patient will naturally experience some relief, which is the first step to comfort (Ashiq Ali, A., 2022). Further, the self-care deficit theory utilizes nurses to help patients by empowering them to do as much as they can independently. As patients improves, the nurse encourages the transition for the patient to do even more by themselves.
The theory of comfort and self-care deficit will be the foundation in choosing a clinical scholarly project and in pursuing an advance practice nurse in psychiatric and mental health. These theories target the mental health population of Orem’s self-care deficits and the inability to perform certain daily functions related to health and well-being, such as dressing or bathing (Isik, E., & Fredland, N. M., 2023). An advance practice nurse who is doctorate prepared will be well equipped to meet the various needs of patients demonstrating self-care deficits. These nurses can help patients maintain their own personal hygiene, enable patients to feed themselves, work to simplify toileting needs, and working close with speech pathologist to ensure that any type of speech deficit will not interfere with communication about care (Isik, E., & Fredland, N. M., 2023).
