Chapter 3 “Leadership” discusses the various types of leadership behaviors and character traits for managers. Managers can be those who only manage or those who lead and vice versa. Managers and leaders are two separate roles that must be differentiated in order to know how they function. They claim, according to Hudson and Booth, that “the title of manager guarantees the person who holds the title will also be a good leader”. Leaders are those who are “people-oriented”, but may or may not be formal or informal leaders (Hudson & Booth, pg. 64). In other words, they are great at communicating, motivating, showing empathy, and engaging with others. I wanted to discuss these two distinct functions because they are related to what “leadership” and “management” consist of. When you think of managers, one thing that comes to mind is that they want everything to be followed by rules. Hudson and Booth put it so clearly: “these individuals may be very effective at performing management functions (plan, organize, and control) to achieve desired outcomes, but have less success in inspiring and motivating staff members” (pg. 64). To put it simply, management is ensuring that they have a plan and that everything is in order. Leadership is defined as a person’s ability to motivate and inspire others to work toward the same goal (Hudson & Booth, pg. 64). As you can see, there is a significant difference between managing and leading. Recognizing leadership qualities should motivate managers to develop these qualities in themselves so that everything in the work environment can run more efficiently. Showing leadership qualities in the workplace can assist managers in seeking input from others before making any decisions, allowing them to be more open to other perspectives. Apart from that, motivating and inspiring them to work toward the same goal while ensuring that everything is in order can benefit them in achieving the desired results.

The difference between managing and leading is that a manager brings ideas to life, and delegates, such as managing people for projects, allocating resources, and setting the budget to achieve goals. They are in charge of reviewing the documents and approving the work. A manager can plan, organize, and coordinate and leaders inspire, motivate and contribute to developing people’s talent. Every leader may not be a manager, but every manager should have leadership skills. It’s easy to see that leadership and management aren’t the same things, but a manager who lacks effective leadership traits will drive a business into the ground faster. According to Hudson and Booth states, “A manager with effective leadership skills creates and communicates a shared organizational vision, setting the stage for subordinates to achieve this vision, as opposed to only the management of tasks”(62). A good manager with leadership skills will empower team members to do their highest-impact work and achieve the organization’s objectives as a whole. For a manager, it is important to develop these skills as it helps them to know the different personalities and know how to guide each one according to their strengths, for the good of the corporation’s objectives. When visionary companies face high decay rates and employee shortages, they need managers who can inspire workers and create a better work environment without losing authority as an example of leaders “They work well with staff and demonstrate respect, concern, and empathy for others in the work setting…Leaders set expectations, communicate, and engage with their employees…honor differences while being fair to all employees. And leaders take risks when it will benefit the work group”(63). Employees can feel closer to their managers and can function better in the workplace. Managers can gain visionary leadership skills and ultimately serve the best interests of all stakeholders involved and the common good of organizations.
