Running up the stairs with three bags that were my weight. Hungry, tired, and still sick. being no more than 110 lbs. I had lost track of my platoon which I would spend the next 13 weeks training to become a marine. I desperately searched each barracks floor until I arrived at the top one. To my surprise, there was no one there. I stand in the middle of the room listening; trying to hear the screams of the instructors to point out their location. It had only been the first twenty-first hours and I had not started the training and had already failed. As I stand there, for what felt like an eternity my mind began to wander: Have I made a mistake? Am I worthy of being here? Is this all there is to me? I was no stranger to failure or loss. But at that moment I felt something I had never felt before. Defeat. To this realization, my body went numb, my mind blank and I felt nothing. I accepted it. I truly tried my best it was not enough. As I catch my breath, I begin to breathe deeper and deeper. Which each breath I began to feel something arises from within. At that moment, I had let go of myself, I picked up the bags, still as unbearably heavy as before, and took a step forward. As I raise my sight, an instructor stepped into the room. He escorted me to my platoon. This was the moment I was defeated and gave up. After that instant nothing was the same. That moment gave birth to the person I am. Stronger and more courageous. Since that day I have had many losses, but I have had the confidence and courage to overcome them. I believe this event presented an opportunity for me to overcome who I was and become a more capable person. I am very grateful for the experience and this newfound courage that gave me a foundation for new opportunities and allowed me to learn more about the world and myself.
