Sickle cell disease predominantly affects African Americans. The AA community also is disproportionately affected by the health consequences of being a carrier of the recessive gene in the heterozygous condition. How does this affect the treatment of children in educational settings where the teacher and other individuals in authority may not have any familiarity with the challenges of the condition.
For example, children who are heterozygous for the condition become dehydrated more easily and should be allowed to drink water throughout the day, including in the classroom.
