Classmate Post: A nurse wears many different hats. Focusing on safety at all times regardless of position is critical, especially when operating in times of a crisis. Having a successful emergency plan enhances the workers confidence when handling disaster/emergency situations. This also decreases mortality rates from related occurrences. The World Health Organization requires countries and governments to have disaster plans and emergency health workers ready and prepared at all times (Almukhlifi et al., 2021).
Emergency disaster plans are put in place to guide an organization in responding and recovering from a variety of possible occurrences. It provides structure for team members to operate under. Using guidelines to make an escape plan is essential. Safety training is something all medical professionals and organizations need to be familiar with. Two important acronyms used is RACE and PASS. These acronyms guide those on what to do during a fire and how to properly use a fire extinguisher in sequential.
Implementing training programs such as fire drills are effective tools to measure emergency preparedness. In the event of a fire, the term code red is used within my facility. The fire alarm is activated, and one way of determining which floor the fire is located, is by counting the number of times the alarm goes off in one sequence. Notification and effective communication during an emergency situation is critical. Security will also make an announcement as to where the fire is located once discovered. Facilities follow national fire codes. These guidelines used are closely interfaced with other local emergency management system’s plan. Priority is ensuring that ourselves and others are safe and free of injury. Patients who are ambulatory will be relocated or evacuated to a safer location. Those who are non ambulatory will be transported on their bed or an emergency carry. Safety and communication are two key components for successful outcomes. The level of skill and preparedness directly influences the humanitarian, social and economic outcomes of a disaster (Almukhlifi et al., 2021).
