A.The chosen article written by Tagney & Haines (2019), discusses the implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP) and investigation discoveries into clinical care. It goes into detail discoursing the lack of EBP in the nursing workforce and ways in which to employ it, resulting in more proficient patient care and advanced, knowledgeable nursing staff. The problem addressed is the gaps in knowledge among nurses which may decrease the appraisal proficiencies and a reduction of best practice outcomes (Tagney & Haines, 2019).
B.According to Tagney & Haines (2019), solutions to implementing more research and EBP into nursing labor are limited. Suggestions have been brought forth to educate and offer a solution to this matter with hopes of enactment. The proposed solutions include providing a research stratagem development, disbursement of research into clinical routines, and providing educational assistance to facilitate research participation of nurses (Tagney & Haines, 2019).
C.When learning about the positivist and constructivist paradigms and contemplating the pros and cons, the positivist paradigm has more of a realistic foundation for me. It discusses how the extent of research is done through quantitative data collection with statistical investigation. It has a more settling existence with researchers disconnecting themselves from the sought-out inquiry and ascertaining real-world answers to real-world problems (Polit & Beck, 2020, p. 9).
The solution to scholarly article pertaining to the implementation of EBP and research into clinical practice has more of a constructivist paradigm. Solving the issues presented in the article focus more on the prominence on the entirety of the issue and have far-fetched goals rather than realistic solutions. The proposed solutions have been mentally assembled by the scholars. It would be difficult for healthcare facilities to initiate the process of providing research stratagem developments, disbursement (Polit & Beck, 2020, p. 9) of research into clinical routines, and providing educational assistance to facilitate research participation of nurses (Polit & Beck, 2020).
D.According to the National Institute of Health (2018), ethical safeguards are guided by societal and quantifiable significance, scientific authenticity, unbiased subject choice, advantageous risk-benefit quotient, objective review, informed consent, and reverence for possible and registered subjects. In reference to this scholarly article, ethical safeguards were not identified. The research was done specifically on nurses who work in the hospital setting. Ethical studies must comprise of nurses in various areas of employment such as community centers for the underprivileged, nursing homes, traveling nurses, institutional/prison nurses, and home health nurses (National Institutes of Health, 2018).
The article did not attest to obtaining informed consent or scientific validity as well. There is also no mention of vulnerable groups being involved including children, mentally disabled, severely ill, terminally ill, institutionalized, or pregnant persons (Polit & Beck, 2020, pp. 143–144).
E.The data collected through this article that stand is the emphasis to provide more EBP and research into the nurse’s plan of care. Ideally, this is a wonderful proposal as the goal of this is for the betterment of patient care outcomes and a more experienced and knowledgeable nurse. This information obtained is qualitative as it cannot be measured in a numeric value or quantity. Nursing knowledge is qualitative and subject or objective and cannot be put into a specific group. It is important to have scientific data retrieval in order to put a proposed idea into effect as it shows validity and certainty with proof. There is no precise way to determine if EBP and research investment into nursing routine will promote the betterment of patient care as nursing staff knowledge and educational comprehension varies among each person.
Discussion board #2
Upon researching quality initiative articles, the article chosen discusses medication safety and decreasing the number of medication errors. (Flynn et al., 2016)
The solution proposed in this article to overcome the barrier of medication errors is to decrease the number of interruptions the nurse passing medications faces. (Flynn et al., 2016)
Positivist paradigm is factual based reality whereas constructivist paradigm is individual based. Positivist paradigm, is my personal view of the world, due to the hard facts. Positivist paradigm is black and white and easier for me to comprehend. My positivist tendencies influence my view on this quality initiative article because the facts are fixed, specific, and easy to understand. Quantitative data shows that with less interruptions, less mistakes are made. To me that is a fact, therefore I accept it and put it into practice. I would appreciate the solution suggested if implemented at my workplace because it would increase patient safety and help protect me from making a medication error.
This article does not cover ethical safeguards, however a few to consider would be: what interruptions are important enough for the interruption to be validated? Will there be extra staff to aid in caring for the interruptions when they occur? Experience of the nurse passing medications should also be considered. (Getnet & Bifftu, 2017)
Quantitative data in the article suggests that the number of interruptions significantly decreased after implementing this practice (up to 83%). This allows the nurse to pass medications with less distractions and more focus on patient safety. (Flynn et al., 2016)
