Application essay:
From a young age, I have always been taught the importance of giving back to my community. Whether it is through volunteering my time or donating money to worthy causes, I have always felt that it is our responsibility as citizens of the world to help those who are less fortunate than us. That is why I was thrilled when I discovered the Society of Orphaned Armenian Relief (SOAR), an organization that provides tangible and intangible support to orphans in Armenia.
Since 2017, I have been involved with SOAR in various capacities, including organizing and participating in fundraising events, raising awareness about the plight of Armenian orphans, and serving on the SOAR Youth Council. Through my work with SOAR, I have had the opportunity to meet some fantastic people from all over the world who are passionate about making a difference. I am proud to say that together we have raised over $50,000 to provide Armenian orphans with food, clothing, and shelter! We have also been able to pay for their education and medical expenses. In addition, we have provided emotional support to these orphans through our mentorship program. By pairing each orphan with a mentor, we have been able to help them build self-confidence and develop social skills.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my work with SOAR has been seeing the direct impact that our efforts have had on the lives of these incredibly resilient children. For many, SOAR is the only source of support they have outside of their orphanage. Knowing that I am playing a small role in helping them thrive despite all odds is an incredible feeling.
There are many ways to give back to one’s community, but for me, there is no greater satisfaction than knowing that my efforts are directly and positively impacting the lives of others. If given the opportunity, I would love to give back to the UC campus community through student organizations that serve the greater good.
