Use as a source: Interpersonal Communication, Everyday Encounters by Julia Wood 9th edition IBSN: 0013581473 Publisher: Cengage
1. In what situations would you be more likely to communicate emotions through electronic means rather than in person?
2. Can you think of a display rule for emotions that is not mentioned in the chapter? What is it and why do you think this norm developed?
3. According to the text, a key aspect of emotional competence is adequate emotional vocabulary. For this exercise, you will reflect on your emotional vocabulary. Listed below are some of the more common emotion words people use. For each one, write out four other emotion words that describe subtle distinctions in feeling.
For example, anger may be substituted with: (1)resentment, (2) outrage, (3) offense, and (4) irritation depending on the intensity of the emotion.
What three adjectives/emotions can capture the nuances of:
1. Sadness
2. Anxiety
3. Happiness
4. Extend this exercise by trying to describe your feelings more precisely to others for the next week. Be sure to use I-language. Did expanding your emotional vocabulary this week give you and others more understanding of what you are feeling? In your opinion, does having an adequate emotional vocabulary represent emotional intelligence?
