Social media has become a fundamental means for getting out the message of the company as well as fostering a community of customers. Although it has great power to advance the mission of the firm–it may also be a significant risk. Customers now have a powerful vehicle for letting the world know what went wrong (when something does go wrong). The classic example of this was when United Airlines damage a customer’s guitar, but refused to compensate.
After this happened, the customer created a music video on Youtube that went viral and became a public relations nightmare.
