This is a research assignment based on significant events in Puerto Rican history.
Your first of two research assignments is to write a 3-5 page paper, using proper citation and formatting (assigned by the instructor) guidelines, on a single event, the names of which are provided on this sheet.
The due date for the assignment is on the course outline.
This assignment is designed to provide the student with a look at notable occurrences in the history of the island. As you study the event, you will develop a feel for its background, the event itself, and its consequences.
This assignment allows you to learn about regular folks doing great things, and can be very eye-opening.
Procedure for the assignment:
Choose your preferred assignment. The list is below:
Grito de Lares
Manos a la Obra
The Rio Piedras Massacre The Spanish-American War
The “Plan Chardon”
The Taino Rebellion
The Constitution of 1812 The Jones/Shafroth Act
First, choose the event you wish to examine as listed in the thread; the discussion thread will shut down at the end of the week, so make your choice sooner rather than later.
Find out about the event you have selected by locating two non-Wikipedia sources that deal with it. A word of advice: each event has a good body of research done on it, and probably an institute to research it at some university.
Search for it by locating places that might study them- universities, museums, historical sites, etc. You may consider speaking to a representative of that organization- it’s a great source;
Find two other sources- on-line is fine: newspapers, articles, professional journals, etc.- that discuss the event; then
Write a short reaction paper to the event. Research the event for three main themes- what happened? Why did it happen? What happened as a result?
Organize, write, cite, and submit the paper. The assignment should comprise from 750-1250 words, or 3-5 pages. It will be submitted via email to the instructor.
