For this week, the class is asked to choose a major career path that involves doing therapy or counseling. Then we are expected to discuss the requirements and details of the position. My choice of profession, that involves therapy and counseling, is going to be a school counselor. I chose this career path because I personally would like to pursue this career in my near future. I am currently employed as a tutoring teacher, so that I may gain experience in the education field.
To become a school counselor, or as the BLS labels it “instructional coordinator”, one needs to obtain a Master’s degree for educational standards (BLS, 2019). Alongside this Master’s, BLS (2019) also states that there is work experience required in the educational field, in the amount of around 5 years experience. Among other educational professions, such as becoming an ESL teacher or primary teacher, becoming an instructional coordinator is the most demanding as far as expectations and prerequisites go.
Instructional coordinators made an average of $63,740 a year in 2021, with about 205,700 total instructional coordinator jobs in practice in the US. “Instructional coordinators oversee school curriculums and teaching standards. They develop instructional material, implement it, and assess its effectiveness.” (BLS, 2019) As well as making schedules for students, school counselors also are looking out for their students, providing consultations if a student is having issues that are effecting their school work. This is why I would like to become a guidance counselor, because I believe that helping kids, in turn, is helping the future generation. Also, interacting with the youth keeps me “in touch”
with popular phenomenon, as it is very easy to lose touch when growing older.
All in all, while the requirements to become an instructional coordinator are vast and demanding, I believe that these requirements are just because of just how impactful it is to be a counselor. Students and teachers are taking into account what a counselor says, and one needs to be properly certified to hold such a position.
