David Shore Post:
EEO laws transform a discriminatory and toxic work environment by not focusing on our individual characteristics but rather on our merit, hard work, and equality. The protected classes that may not be discriminated against are “discrimination protection currently provided on race, religion, gender, national origin, age, and disability to sexual orientation and gender identity” (Snell et al., 2015, p. 91). With these in mind, no employee or employer should ever be discriminating against anyone, but these are the legally protected groups. Reverse discrimination, however, is also an issue. Everyone should be treated equally when others are given an unfair advantage this will only create resentment amongst the organization and ostracize others. I think if we worried more about hiring on characteristics, work ethic, morals, and values, this would make the biggest change in our country and organizations today. If we continue to make vague laws with good intentions, they continue to muddy the waters and make the professional work environment that much harder to work in. Ultimately, the respect of others as humans with equal rights is what is strived for, and that is what should be promoted within the work environment. I would also use competency-based job analysis to ensure there is not any biased based on any of the protected categories, both for and against. This strategy would allow employers to see where the employee may struggle in certain areas that do not align with the organization; even though their competency-based job analysis may show they are perfectly suitable, their personality and character traits are not, and this can be used vice versa. This is essential when choosing candidates who can perform the job effective and efficiently. In the military, we are required to take the ASVAB to see where our strengths may line up with regards to our job choice when joining and a physical fitness test. I believe this is effective since it is based on your intellectual knowledge and skills, and physical abilities. Both of which you can improve on your own.
