Art of theatre
For your resit assessment, submit an essay on a different topic to your semester essay.
EITHER:
1. ‘The theatre director is something like a thinker of representation as such, who carries out very complex investigations into the relationships between text, acting, space and public’ (Alain Badiou, The Century, trans. Alberto Toscano, Cambridge: Polity, 2007: 40).
Discuss the role of the theatre director as a ‘thinker of representation’ by examining how at least one director studied on the course has conducted ‘complex investigations’ into the relationships between text, performance and audience.
Your essay should address the directorial strategies and compositional methods they have developed in order to meet the challenge of staging modern drama.
OR:
2. ‘The art of theatre is a collective art. … Insofar as the theatre is a product of collective creativity, it requires a director, whose intrinsic role is the co-ordination and ultimate harmonization of the creativity of separate individualities.’ (Aleksander Tairov, cited in Christopher Innes and Maria Shetsova, The Cambridge Introduction to Theatre Directing, Cambridge: CUP, 2013: 87).
Discuss the role of the director as the co-ordinator of the theatre-making process, examining the strategies developed by at least one director studied on the course for constructing mise-en-scène.
