I think that the sacred and secular divide is seen very often nowadays. there’s a lot of talk about separation of church and state, and I think this often falls into that category. I also think it is seen a lot due to people not wanting the public to know about their personal life, so they keep that separate, almost like they’re living a double life in a way. with the sacred part of this divide leaning more towards values, experience, and religion, it fits into a topic a lot of people don’t want to share with others. Meanwhile, scientific information, opinions, facts, and topics which don’t relate to your values tend to come up more in conversation. I think religion is pushed away from the public arena because if you bring up religion others tend to think you are forcing your religion on them. this makes it hard to engage your religion into your life. some other areas in my life that I can see sacred and secular divide are that I am a Sunday school teacher but also, I’m going to school to be a special education teacher. these are two very different things, and you can bring up religion a lot more at church than you can in a school system without offending others. However, I think the divide can be eliminated if we take into consideration people have different religions and expressed those religions in different ways and just because it is brought up in a conversation does not mean they’re trying to force it on you, they may just be trying to share their personal life with you. As a teacher I could do this by just being a good Christian everywhere I go, this would help me spread my religion without anyone feeling as though it is being pushed onto them.
