The Ethics of Designer Babies
Unlike the first two essays, this assignment will be more opinion based rather than science based. The topic for this unit is: The Ethics of Designer Babies.
A designer baby is a baby that has been genetically engineered in vitro to have or not have certain traits.
For example, individuals may choose to remove disease-associated genes and/or select a child’s gender. Essentially, parents are able to pick and choose which traits they want their kids to have and which ones they don’t want them to have.
Your task for this assignment is to first become an expert on the topic of designer babies and the current status of associated procedures and technologies. Be sure to use and cite reputable sources of information.
(1) summarize what you have learned about the topic and then
(2) state your opinion as to whether or not you feel this practice is ethical and should be allowed to occur.
