Communication Story
Critical Component 1:
Outline the strengths and weaknesses of your communication
Compare thinking and behavior with the competent communicator outline
Examine the effectiveness of your communication regarding interpersonal contexts. e.g., your ability to articulate your thoughts and ideas, your listening behavior, your ability to receive and apply feedback, your conflict management skills, respecting boundaries, etc.
Examine the effectiveness of my communication regarding professional contexts e.g., how well you perform in small groups, your public speaking skills, presenting in meetings, your overall professional demeanor, etc.
What communication habits have you adopted?
What data can you provide which supports your effective and/or ineffective communication behavior? Cite the textbook, articles, and lecture.
Critical Component 2:
Reflect on the most impactful course you have taken as a communication scholar (be sure to only reference a communication course).
Why was this course so impactful?
What was it about the course experience and material that influenced your thinking and behavior?
How are you forever changed by this educational experience? Be specific, and cite accordingly.
Critical Component 3:
Identify a theory that has shifted your thinking as a communicator, helped you better understand the communication process, or has greatly impacted your understanding of human communication behavior.
Briefly outline this theory, pointing to 2 or 3 relevant concepts that helped to illuminate this theory (be sure to define them and cite them accordingly – expand on how they have impacted your thinking or behavior).
Select three peer-reviewed research articles published in the last 5-7 years that use this theory as a lens for research; one article should have an interpersonal application, one should have a professional application, and one should personally resonate with you.
Synthesize the articles much like you would for an Article Synopsis and Application assignment, highlighting the topic, findings, and including how this research helps to advance your understanding of communication and the practical application(s) of this theory.
Critical Component 4:
Reflect on this assignment, your time in this course, and your time in this major.
What have you learned about yourself and others?
What have been the best and the most challenging parts?
