The Medical History of Epilepsy
As you will learn throughout the semester, how you think about and treat diseases changes dramatically over time. Many social forces influence medicine and learning to understand that is essential for fostering a humanistic perspective on medical care.
To have you practice this way of thinking, write a paper describing how people treated and experienced a single disease from the ancient period to the present.
Find a way to talk about the condition in the Ancient, Medieval, Early Modern, and Modern Periods. You will be expected to read both primary and secondary sources to explore the varied ways your selected condition existed across time too.
As you read and write, you will develop a main statement that argues why studying the history of your disease chosen matters today. Your response must be specific to your disease.

Select a disease from human history. It can be any pandemic acknowledged by historians of medicine, even if we don’t discuss it in class.
