Abstract
Background: Violence against nurses in the workplace is a global nursing professional practice issue that has negative impacts to not only the nurses but also the quality of care provided and overall cost of healthcare. According to Al-Qadi (2021), about 25% of nurses reported physical assault by a patient or family member, over 50% reported verbal abuse or bullying and 17.2% of nurses to leave their job every year due to workplace violence. This research review aims to explore the effects of violence prevention/management (de-escalation) training in reducing the incidents of violent acts against nurses. Objective: In emergency departments and psychiatric inpatient setting, what effect does implementation of crisis management training, compared to the absence of this training, have on the incidence of workplace violence? Methods: Data from six research studies was reviewed and data/information pertinent violence against nurses and the effects of violence prevention/crisis management in the patient setting was collected for review. Results: The findings of the six research studies showed that workplace violence prevention training helped prevent and manage violence among nurses in both Emergency room and psychiatric In-patient settings. Conclusions: Workplace violence against nurses has been an ongoing issue for many years. The research studies reviewed showed the effectiveness of crisis prevention/management (de-escalation) training in reducing the incidences of violence against nurses in the Emergency room and Psychiatric in-patient setting. Relevance to Clinical Practice: Workplace violence is a nursing issue that affects the quality of care provided, decreases the nurses job satisfaction and results in increased healthcare costs.
