In this activity, you will be addressing a discussion question regarding ISIS and its foundations.
After the 9/11 attacks on New York City, a swift and relentless retaliation was undertaken by the US and its allies against al Qaeda. This caused a significant change in their organizational structure, power, and ability to engage in terror attacks. However, another group representing the Islamic culture arose to not only engage in terror but create an entirely new state in the Middle East.
The U.S. may have helped to break up the ISIS proto-state or “caliphate” in Syria and Iraq, but it has scarcely defeated it.
In what parts of the world are they reemerging and most active?
By what means have they been securing geographic footholds?
How are they acquiring financial resources and support?
Do you think they will be successful in their attempt? Why or why not?
