Assignment 2: Analysis of Contemporary Art
To analyze contemporary art in relation to the themes of individualism and community.
Overview
Our lectures left off with the discussion of some art from the 1960’s. But the issue of
individualism and community continues to this day. For this assignment analyze a contemporary example of art through using the themes of individualism and community. Hopefully that will help to give us a sense for contemporary developments in this area.
Steps:
1. Think of some example of contemporary American art (film, music, literature,
photography, painting, etc.) that can be interpreted as a statement about the relationship of individualism and community. You should choose a work of art that was created in the last 10 years.
2. In an essay of at least ½ page (200 words) discuss that art, and tell us what type of
statement you believe that art makes about individualism and community in America today.Also briefly say if you think that the work of art reflects the reality of the American community in the 21st century and why.
3. Post your assignment to the group discussion board by following the Assignments link to Module 6, Assignment 2. If it is possible to attach the work of art or a link to a page discussing the work of art, do so. If it is not possible, just explain why in your essay; that is OK.
4. Reply to at least one of your classmates posts. Discuss one or two elements of their
analysis that you found interesting. (reply worth 2 points total)
