Intro to Film

Directions: In Jenna Avery’s (2013) article “The Purpose and Value of Science Fiction,” she discusses the important roles the genre of Science Fiction plays in our culture.

Complete the template below for each of her four main points. Make sure to use complete sentences and discuss your chosen film in detail.

The “what ifs” that this film makes us think about are: What if humans gained the ability to clone extinct and/or prehistoric species? What if extinct and/or prehistoric species were cloned for big-business / capitalist purposes?

The major “why” that this film makes us ask is: Why would we clone extinct and/or prehistoric species and not foresee serious consequences?

This particular film is concerned with three types of societal “treatment”:

First, it investigates the treatment between tourist parks and tourist safety.

Second, the film investigates society’s ethical responsibility of “reviving” extinct species.

Last, the film investigates what responsibilities mankind has toward the preservation of a species .

The films answer to the “where we end up” questions is a complex one.  The film promotes scientific innovation if it is used to protect an endangered, currently existing species.

However, it appears to warn viewers that if we re-introduce naturally extinct species into our environment, there will be dire consequences .

This film focuses on the new technologies of cloning, DNA hybridizing, and genetic tampering.  These are currently technologies in the 21st century that are being investigated via genetics.
