Foundation and Component of Reading
The purpose of this assignment is for students to undertake intermediate level scholarly research to demonstrate their understanding of the foundations and components of the reading process. Using this research, students will begin to develop their own teaching rationale about reading from a perspective of teaching and learning linked to evidence-based practice in the content area of literacy.
Task Description
History has shown that the teaching of reading is a complex process that relies on multiple elements to work together in synergy. The process of reading has been likened to that of operating a car (Adams, 1990) or a rope (Scarborough, 2001) in which readers rely on many systems and parts operating simultaneously to decode and make meaning from texts.
Teachers are frequently expected to apply the best evidence-based practice to guide their pedagogical decision making.
As such, it is critically important that educators understand the foundations and underpinning principles in how students learn to read.
Explore the foundations, elements and or theories that comprise of the above reading process and consider the impact of receptive literacy and these literacy demands in the broader school curriculum.
Reflect upon this research and how it impacts decisions in the context of teaching and learning in the K-6 classroom.
