Write 1-2 paragraphs on your proposed topic for your final project, which can be A) a 8-10-page historical research paper or B) an “unessay.” Submit your proposal in a proofread, double-spaced Word doc written in 12-point font with 1-inch margins. Topics should focus on an era before the 21st century in American/U.S. women’s/gender history.
In other words, in an unessay you have complete freedom of form; what is important is that the format and presentation you choose helps rather than hinders your explanation of the topic. You can create almost anything, as long as you seriously and meaningfully engage with the themes, and questions that animate our class.
Consider your strengths, talents, and skills and think about how to apply them, this is not the time to learn new technical skills but rather apply what you have to a historical subject. You can create a website, map, video, podcast, drawing/painting, board game/video game, musical piece, short story, social media account, annotated mixtape, or a women’s history walking tour, to list a few ideas.
For either option, your topic should be as specific as possible. You might want to make your topic more specific by focusing on a shorter period of time, or by women’s lives in a certain geographic area, or perhaps by focusing on just one or two women who exemplify an issue you’re interested in. Perhaps you want to focus on a phenomenon in women’s lives more so than specific women themselves, or how certain groups of women have been represented in the past. All of these types of topics are welcome.
In your project proposal, list a few of the research questions that will lie at the heart of your project. What exactly do you want to learn about or understand about this topic? What will be a manageable topic to research and write about over two months?
