Health care law and policy response

Professor’s question: Excellent narrative, so how would you see this from the perspective of Social Determinants of Health?

The difference between illness and disease

A disease refers to something that requires to be cured, such as injury, infection, cell degeneration, toxic exposure, among others, while an illness is something that requires management such as discomfort, feeling pain, weakness, distress, and fatigue, among others. Illness is the suffering from the thing that makes an individual sick. It spans during a short period of time, indicating that they have a starting and an end (Wikman et al., 2005). Generally, an illness is typically known as an unhealthy state of body or mind. A disease is suffering from a non-functioning body part or with the body itself. Generally, a disease cannot occur from an occurrence or event or an external character.

Understanding the distinction between disease and illness is significant to allow individuals receive the care they need. Victims should know what they expect when they visit a physician in a healthcare center.

There are examples of market justice and social justice healthcare in the modern world. For instance, the private manager offered health insurance, which primarily applies to the middle-class Americans, is steered by market justice, as this team can pay for the healthcare services because the manager is willing to give. An example of social justice health care is educating nurses to advocate for victims (Hoek, 2017). A nurse’s duty involves intervening in support of victims giving practical and sympathetic medical care. Other examples of social justice healthcare include the installation of virtual care tactics and forming various care delivery prototypes.

Cultural factors are one of the four social determinants of health. To enhance the healthcare of individuals in general, healthcare givers should consider several cultural factors such as:

Community and family- individuals have certain beliefs due to community or family influences. Understanding such situations when giving healthcare services is essential.

Religion- when administrating healthcare services, it is paramount to consider the patient’s religion.

Gender roles- distinct gender duties usually have particular beliefs regarding medical treatment (Viner et al., 2012). For instance, women may request less unwanted treatments to make them feel comfortable.

There are some of the characteristics of the American health care system. One of the features is that it is driven by technology and delivers a focused approach to acute care. American innovation and research form a demand for current services. Many medical doctors want to try the newest innovations, and technology originates competition between healthcare facilities. Another feature is that the American healthcare system has unequal access and an average result. Moreover, it is high in cost (Khooet al., 2014). America spends more money to implement health care services than any other country, but still, some citizens do not have access to the care. Much care is delegated to health insurance companies and other government programs.

Good health care services are an essential foundation for functioning in society. Illnesses and diseases are always part of people’s lives, and it is paramount for health care providers to differentiate them for better treatment.
