Epidemiology Research Paper
The purpose of this assignment is to write a scholarly paper discussing a communicable disease, demonstrating knowledge of epidemiological principles and the community health nurses’s role in disease surveillance, including case finding, data collection, reporting, and evaluation.
Choose a communicable disease from the modified CDC’s “2018 National Notifiable Conditions” provided by the instructor. Only ONE student per topic.
Write a scholarly paper on the selected communicable disease. The paper should be 2,000 words length maximum.
1. Present a brief clinical description of a communicable disease (including signs and symptoms, diagnostic methods, treatment, incubation, possible complications and prognosis).
2. Provide a written epidemiological description of the model, selecting an appropriate epidemiological model (use the EPI Triangle) and describe the model and what it depicts.
3. Provide a visual/graphic of the model. In the appendix include and label a diagram of the model. (Not generic but specific to the disease, if not your own model needs to be cited).
4. Describe each of the following: agent, host, and environment, the characteristics and factors as well as the relationships between them.
5. Discuss the local, national and global impact of the disease including statistics on prevalence and incidence.
Discuss the effects/implications of the disease locally, nationally and globally. If the disease is not a current threat may discuss historical context instead.
6. Based on available data, assess and evaluate the effectiveness of current public health education and prevention programs (local/global) related to this disease. Identify gaps and areas of opportunity for improvement, further research or program successes as applicable.
7. Apply the following roles of professional nursing regarding the surveillance of this disease: case finding, reporting, data collection and analysis, and follow-up/evaluation.
