Reflect on what it is real about the family and their emotions and what it is artificially made up.

Infant observation Record

The observation will normally be focused around an infant or young toddler (up to 2 years).

The observation should be based virtually on you tube or Netflix.

Before starting the virtual placement, students will need to observe the family to gain some information about the family.

During the Observation:

Focus on the interactions between the baby and its parents or the baby and the nursery teacher.

Focus on the baby development

Focus on how the baby relate to others (siblings/ other children)

Focus on how the baby moves or how the baby sleeps or how the baby eats.

Include all that you observe, verbal and non-verbal behaviour.

Focus on how you feel watching them.

During your first presentation you should provide this information:

A paragraph or more to describe the family or the nursery setting.

Name

Age

Gender

Ethnic Background

Physical appearance

Presenting behaviour in general

Context of the observation (place, staff/, family home).

Remember to reflect on your role as an observer, include your subjective impressions: note how things felt to you what you were feeling and the feelings you felt from others

Reflect carefully about their feelings when watching virtually the family. The student will need to learn to reflect on what it is real about the family and their emotions and what it is artificially made up.

Confidentiality

Use a pseudonym (a false name) not the real name of the infant.  State explicitly that this is the name you are choosing to call the person.  Further, use a pseudonym for all persons involved, parents, relatives, nursery workers, and for the name of the organisation where the observations takes place in a nursery.

All identifying details of clients, staff and the organisation must be kept confidential – this might mean more than just changing the name.
