The book review should follow the format works of the Journal of African American History or Journal of American History.
The summary of the book should be kept to a minimum, while the gist of the book should focus on the argument, methods, sources used, and the book’s historical significance.
Essentially, the book review should:
1. explain the book’s basic argument;
2. assess the book’s strengths and weaknesses;
3. note the book’s historical relevance;
4. provide evidence to support the evaluation;
5. evaluate how well the author succeeds in achieving the stated goals in the book.
