Dr. James Weinstein daughter had leukemia and was forced to do treatments without being properly informed and he feared for his daughters life and did anything necessary to do so, when the cancer came back they wanted him to do more invasive treatment with out informed patient choice and the treating doctor threatened him if he did not do the invasive procedures and report him to children abuse.

1.In your own words, what is patient centered care? What do you think are two challenges of moving to a care model based on informed, shared decision making which puts the patient’s needs first?

2.The personal stories in MDM provide powerful arguments about why it is important for patients and their families to become their own advocates. From the film, what have you learned about being an informed patient?

3.Clearly, this is not a newly released documentary. More updated ones which provided a wide angle lens on healthcare in the US, but could not find one that had anything different to report. Many of you work in healthcare or are caring for others and have some valuable real life experiences to share. Use your experience and wisdom to comment on:

a.What, if anything, do you think has changed in healthcare since the 2009 film?
