For this essay, you are being asked to produce a personal narrative about an event (or events) in your life.
What event you focus on is entirely up to you, but an assignment of this type works best if you can show a change in your “self” character from start to finish or show that you’ve experienced a new insight or learned something about yourself. Be sure to include a title and use standard formatting: double-spacing, one-inch margins, 12-point Times New Roman font.
The following events can be written about: focus on a single event (the time I walked around at a convention—as a twelve-year-old—with the back of my dress tucked into my tights) or a series of related events (the time with the tights plus three or four other embarrassing experiences of adolescence).
Focusing on one event allows you to really develop a single incident, focusing on the details, setting, and results of the event while focusing on several allows you to make a larger point about the events when viewed collectively (in my case, the pain of adolescence).
