As a nurse manager, you have noticed the nursing staff on the unit not working as a team. Numerous staff has made comments that their patient assignment is heavy and no one will help. One nurse stated, “It is humiliating to ask for help and not get any.” Another nurse stated that during the last 2-12 hour shifts he only had one 10-minute break, “No one seems to care,” he stated.
The manager wants to address this issue because it appears to have affected patient satisfaction. The patient satisfaction data for the last 6 months shows a steady decrease in patient satisfaction on the unit. There has recently been a loss of 2 nurses and neither nurse has been replaced, so it is true that everyone is working short.
As the nurse manager on the unit you want to show as much support and care as you can to your team but it is hard to know where to begin. Use your own perspective to suggest how this situation should be approached, what you would you like to see as a potential solution, and/or what method would you like to see used to reach a solution?
