WK 7 peer Values Underlying Theory and the NASW Code of Ethic
Every profession has a code of ethics that guides professional behavior. In social work, the NASW Code of Ethics guides the behavior and decision-making practices of social workers. It is important that the theories social workers select in working with clients align, or are consistent, with the values and ethical principles identified in the NASW Code of Ethics.
In this Discussion, you align ethics and theory in relation to practice.

Empowerment Theory in social work involves the utilization of intervention models to support clients and empower them as they gain their own sense of control. The main assumptions of this theory are to reduce the feelings of powerlessness or hopelessness that a client may feel. The overall goal of empowerment theory is to support the client as they gain more independence and feel more comfortable in life. Regarding the NSAW Code of Ethics, empowerment theory relates and is based on the social work’s core values relating to; human worth, human relationships, integrity, and competency.
In my current and previous field experience, I have employed empowerment theory for several individuals I have worked with. I am currently a case manager for an adult individual that I have been working with for almost a year. This individual struggles with human relationships, self-confidence and self-esteem. Recently, this client contacted me in a crisis due to an unhealthy relationship and living arrangement. I used empowerment theory to identify the problems/barriers this client was facing. I also helped assist the client with defining certain strengths they held, and how to act on these strengths. Empowerment theory also allowed me as the professional to set goals with the client, which will help them show progress in treatment, and at addressing these barriers. As a case manager, my overall job function is to support my clients as they receive individual, group, and/or family counseling. I also help address certain barriers they face.
Code of Ethics 1.02 – Self-Determination can be used to support Empowerment Theory. This code from NASW states that social workers respect and promote the right of clients to self-determination and assist clients in their efforts to identify and clarify their goals (NASW, 2021). Self-determination and willpower give clients the support they need when making decisions to improve their wellbeing.

The empowerment approach to social work practice focuses on facilitating power for groups and individuals who have been impacted by various forces of oppression. Empowerment theory takes into account the many different ways that oppression affects clients and offers ways to empower individual and structural change to reduce oppressive circumstances such as poverty, lack of resources, and discrimination (Turner, 2017, P. 148). The empowerment paradigm for social work practice is very much aligned with the core values of the NASW Code of Ethics. The Preamble of the code is clear that social workers have a duty to promote human well-being particularly for those who are vulnerable, marginalized, or oppressed (NASW, 2021). Empowerment theory puts a heavy emphasis on empowering oppressed populations and promoting structural change.
I worked with a client who has recently immigrated to the United States from India, and is pursuing a college degree. This client has a disability and because of this, requires certain assistive technology for school that is very expensive. There is an agency that sponsors this technology for students, however they do not offer services to international students. In essence, this client is facing oppressive circumstances due to poverty, and due to the agency’s discriminatory policy regarding international students.
One ethical standard that would apply with this client is cultural competence (NASW, 2021, Sect. 1.05. In working with clients of diverse populations who may be facing different forms of marginalization and discrimination, it is important to carry an awareness of each client’s unique cultural experience. In working with this client, I utilized empowerment principles by helping him to maximize his available resources and advocating for the client to have access to important technology for his education.
