Discussion Forum #1 Clinical Observation – Focus: Individual Communicating/Providing Education/Coaching During a Patient Encounter.
Observe a nurse or other member of the inter-professional team providing patient education, instruction or coaching to a single patient, client or group.
Observe and reflect on how this individual communicates and provides education/coaching, using information competency skills as a means of improving the delivery of safe and effective patient care.
Activity: You will go to a clinical area and observe:
Identify the topic being taught, who it is being taught, and who is doing the teaching.
Formulate or identify the educational or knowledge-based Nursing Diagnosis using NANDA related to the topic.
Identify the behavior change (goal of the teaching) that was needed.
Identify any cultural barriers to communications.
Identify the information competency skills, techniques and/or tools that the individual used when doing the teaching/coaching.
Support your narrative with citations and references with at least 3 sources of information from your text or the literature.
Evaluate/Analyze
Identify and evaluate the outcome. What influence did the education/coaching provided have on the health behavior that needed attention? Use examples from the clinical observation.
Support this with information from your text or the literature with citations and references from readings.
Look at communication “does” and “don’ts”. Name one “communication don’t” you noticed.
Describe what new information about the communications process you learned or enjoyed while participating in this this module? Why did you think or feel this way?
Completion:
The initial discussion posting should be at least five paragraphs. The initial discussion posting should be typed, copied, and pasted and entered in the discussion forum space. Attach the word document.
To successfully complete the discussion forum, you must post your initial discussion and reply to TWO different student posts by the due date in Moodle. Spread your responses to other student posting over three days to get a variety of postings to respond to.
