Scenario
Ellie Carlton dob 3/7/93 and has a learning disability. Her parents struggled to look after her when she was a child, and she was looked after by social services from the age of five.
She now lives alone in flat 4C Ashwood Rd, Greenwich. She enjoys living there and has a support worker, Carly, visit every day in the morning. Carly helps her to organise her day and ensure that she keeps on top of the household chores, bills and manages to get to work okay. Ellie works part–time in a supermarket, cleaning and generally helping out. She finds the work hard but enjoys getting out and meeting people. She enjoys going to her local church and has very helpful neighbours.
One of the staff at the supermarket has become a very good friend. They go out together at least twice a week. Ellie always must pay as Bernard Lane, dob 17/9/81, never seems to have any money. He was divorced two years ago and says that his money has to go towards supporting his daughter. He had been ‘sofa surfing’ and asked if he can move in with Ellie, as her flat is quite big. Ellie was very excited and confided in Carly that although they hadn’t started a sexual relationship, she hoped they would and that one day they might get married.
However, it seemed to Carly that Bernard was using her place like a hotel. He doesn’t do any of the chores and doesn’t even pay towards any of the bills, including the food. If challenged, he becomes angry and storms out. Carly has seen Ellie become so sad and starting to become withdrawn. Initially Bernard slept on the couch, but Carly noticed that Ellie seems to be sleeping on the sofa now and Bernard is using the bedroom. Ellie said this was due to his ‘bad’ back.
On Carly’s last visit, Ellie was very upset. And withdrawn. She explained that Bernard’s girlfriend had stayed for the last few days. Ellie wished she had never agreed to have Bernard stay, but she said: ‘You can’t put ketchup back in the bottle’. She seemed to feel she had no choice. Carly tried to speak to Bernard, but he moved very close to her and told her to ‘mind her own business’. Carly felt quite intimidated by him and left the room. She said that she needed to speak to Ellie who was in the bathroom. As she waited, she saw Bernard take some money from Ellie’s purse. This was the last straw, she told him Ellie doesn’t have much and he shouldn’t be taking what little she has. Bernard swore at her and told her to leave as they didn’t need her anymore, as he and his girlfriend, Lizzy, could look after Ellie. Ellie came in from the bathroom, she seemed tired and despondent.
Bernard said to Ellie: ‘You’ve seen her now, so clear off!’. Carly left before the situation became worse and called her manager.
