1. Define Bone Mineral Density and describe why low bone mineral density is a concern.
2. Describe the mechanism by which the body regulates calcium in the blood and in the bone. Make sure you discuss the hormones involved (including vitamin D which is now classified as a hormone and a vitamin).
3. List all the vitamins and minerals needed for healthy bones then give a good dietary source for each of them.
4. What are the risk factors for osteoporosis? Separate them into modifiable and non-modifiable.
5. How does physical activity even in young people help to prevent osteoporosis?
Chapter 10
1. What is the difference between anabolism and catabolism? Give at least 1 example of how each of these are used in our body.
2. Micronutrients do not contain any energy themselves, but they can contribute to making our metabolism run more efficiently as enzymes and co-enzymes. Explain the role of B vitamins in our metabolism and where we find them in our diet.
3. Create a list of the vitamins for energy and blood- give an example food source for each.
