Each student will be required to submit an essay, not exceeding 1500 words (4 pages: 1, 5 spacing, font 12), on the following:
The discovery of minerals in the late nineteenth century i.e. diamonds in 1867 and gold in 1886, dramatically changed the economic and political structure of southern Africa.
Critically examine its impact on the economic development of the Southern Africa region.
It is recommended that students begin considering what they are going to write for this essay as soon as possible, as at least five solid sources academic articles or books in addition to the prescribed readings will be required.
The essay writing and plagiarism rules, with which students will be familiar from the first year, will, of course, be in place in this course. If students are not familiar with these rules it is incumbent upon them to gain their familiarity.
The assessment (for the essay) will be based on the following criteria:
The clarity with which the essay topic is specified, as well as any limitations, qualifications and focus.
The structure and organization of the essay.
The sophistication of the argument.
The effectiveness to which use of data and other information is marshaled and used.
Elegance and presentational aspects.
The extent to which use is made of the relevant literature.
The completeness and consistency of text referencing and bibliography.
Note: Any evidence of plagiarism or unacknowledged use of material, data, and ideas will be severely penalized according to School and University rules.
