You will write a 5- to 6-page analytical paper about whether the movie promotes realistic or unrealistic social norms for teenagers. This assignment should include the following 3 components:
Part 1:
Describe one specific adolescent development construct that is accurately portrayed in the movie. This may include any of the topics covered in your book such as identity development, peer support/pressure, family conflict, romantic relationships, etc.
Provide an assessment of how the portrayal of the construct was accurate and/or realistic.
Link concepts, theories, and research from the course with the “data” from the movie.
Be sure to clearly describe the example from the movie so it is clear that you understand the concepts.
Part 2:
Describe one specific adolescent myth or stereotype that is reinforced in the movie. This may include any of the myths or stereotypes that we have discussed or any that you may know. An example would be, “Adolescents are crazy and impulsive because of raging hormones.”
Link concepts, theories, and research disproving the myth that you see reinforced in the movie.
Describe the example from the movie so it is clear that you understand the concepts.
Part 3:
Provide your overall evaluation of the movie.
Describe whether this movie is a good and/or poor illustration of adolescent development.
Would you recommend that teenagers watch this movie?
Is the movie likely to impact adolescents’ identity formation or their self-esteem in positive or negative ways?
